I'm trying to find a specific model but the only brands I can think of to search for are AMT and Revell. I'm not looking for diecast, I want the kind that you build.

Autoart, Minichamps, Tamiya, Sun-Star (so-so but they have good products), UT.
If you're checking if a certain car exists as a scale model, I recommend
this site
, although it shouldn't be taken as a bible.

What are you looking for and what scale? Chances are if one of the big brands doesn't carry it, there might be a resin kit.
There is also Fujimi, trumpeter, tamiya....

Lindburg - I think that's how it's spelled.
Ertl- basically AMT but people sometimes use Ertl for tags

I think Maisto may have a few out there as well. But I'm not sure.

Check out Tamiya, serious quality and detail, plenty of cars and planes! Also historically famous for awesome DIY rc cars.

Autoart, because they have the Alfa Romeo Montréal and the Volvo 850R Wagon.

In order of greatness:
1. Tamiya
2. Aoshima
3. Fujimi
Between the three, and the ones you already know about, you can find just about any car ever made, in model form.
